In Memoriam – Eunice Borovik, President of Portage Park Chamber – 1922-2010

Eunice Borovik, the longtime member and president of the Portage Park Chamber of Commerce, passed away on June 9th. She was 88 years old. Eunice is survived by her sons George (Jolanta) and Andrew (Catherine), grandsons Jed and Caleb, numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.

Eunice and her late husband Jerry owned and operated Bee Drug Store in the Cragin neighborhood and Borovik Drug Company in Portage Park. The latter store was opened in 1922 at the southwest corner of Cicero Avenue and Irving Park Road by Jerry’s father and uncle. Jerry and Eunice took over the store in 1961 where it remained an independent community pharmacy until their retirement at the end of 1996.

Eunice became active in the Portage Park Chamber of Commerce in the 1970s and was elected president in 1979, a volunteer position she held for twenty-one years. During her long tenure she was instrumental in the growth of the Chamber from a small association of local merchants into a significant and influential business organization.

From advocating for long overdue streetscape improvements in the early 1980s to working with the Neighborhood Relations Division (n/k/a CAPS) of the Chicago Police Department to reduce crime in our community, Eunice selflessly devoted her time and energy to the betterment of Portage Park and Irving Park.

She was also a great cheerleader for the community, attending many civic functions, serving on local boards and speaking at public events. Without ego or self interest, she promoted the positive, hardworking, family oriented virtues of the northwest side of Chicago.

Eunice was a devoted wife, mother, aunt and friend, always there to provide support and guidance to the people she cared about. She left a great imprint on the many people she touched and will be greatly missed.
